The Female Athlete Visibility Gap | Atlanta Sports Photographer

Women's sports are growing faster than ever. Attendance is climbing. Viewership continues to break records. More girls are participating in organized athletics than any generation before them. Yet when it comes to media coverage, sponsorships, and visual representation, female athletes are still fighting to be seen.

As a former female athlete, this is personal to me.

I know what it feels like to dedicate countless hours to a sport while watching men's teams receive more attention, larger crowds, and greater recognition. Today, as an Atlanta sports photographer, I believe photography plays an important role in changing that narrative.

Why Female Athlete Visibility Is About More Than Photos

Here’s the reality that all female athletes know so well: representation shapes opportunity.

When athletes consistently see themselves featured in newspapers, on school websites, across social media, and in recruiting materials, it sends a clear message that their accomplishments matter equally.

While women's sports continue to gain momentum, the gap remains significant.

Women's sports media coverage has increased in recent years, but still represents only a fraction of overall sports coverage. At the same time, audiences continue to prove there is demand, with women's sporting events regularly setting new attendance and television viewership records. The challenge isn't interest. It's visibility. It’s something that is incredibly important to me as someone who captures sporting events & documents athletes for a living.

This is why Sports Photography Creates Lasting Impact

Sports photography isn't simply about documenting a competition. It's about magnifying the dedication and grit of female athletes. It is about bringing the same level of awareness, sponsorships and opportunities to women who are training and competing.

Knowing that I can show up with my camera and contribute to bridging the visibility gap is something that is really important to me.

I never take it for granted when I’m on the sidelines documenting women in their element.

When schools and athletic programs intentionally invest in professional coverage of their female athletes, they're investing in the future of their program as much as its history.

Every Athlete Deserves to Be Seen

Whether I'm photographing gymnastics, volleyball, basketball, soccer, or another sport, my goal is always the same: create images that reflect the talent, discipline, and determination these female athletes bring every single day.

Because visibility creates recognition.

Recognition creates opportunity.

And every athlete deserves the same opportunities to prove themselves. And to have their story told with the same care and professionalism as the work they've put into their sport. If you’re looking for a photographer who recognizes the female visibility gap and is working to show of women’s sports… I’m your girl. Reach out here to connect!
